Vineet Joshi Appointed Interim Chairman of UGC After Jagadesh Kumar’s Tenure Ends

Following the completion of M. Jagadesh Kumar’s tenure as Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC), Secretary of the Higher Education Department, Vineet Joshi, has been given additional charge as the interim chairman. He will continue in this role until a permanent appointment is made.

Vineet Joshi is a 1992 batch IAS officer. He has previously served in key positions including Chief Secretary of Manipur, Resident Commissioner, Chairman of the CBSE, and Director General of the National Testing Agency (NTA). An alumnus of IIT Kanpur and IIFT, Joshi has a strong academic and administrative background.

Joshi played a vital role in reforming India’s examination system. From December 2019 to November 2020, he successfully oversaw the conduct of national-level exams such as NEET, JEE Main, and UGC-NET through the NTA. As CBSE Chairman from February 2010 to November 2014, he implemented major educational reforms like the Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) system.
