Chamoli: Gas shortage hits weddings, over 50 ceremonies face cylinder crisis

Shortage of commercial LPG cylinders has created serious concern among families preparing for weddings in Chamoli district. With more than 50 marriages scheduled in April across the development block, people say most arrangements are complete but gas cylinders are still unavailable.

Two gas agencies in Tharali and Narayanbagar are responsible for supplying domestic and commercial cylinders to over 7,000 consumers in the region. However, supply vehicles have not been reaching the area regularly. As a result, people are forced to visit agency godowns themselves, where commercial cylinders are currently out of stock.

Residents shared that several families, including those in Kail village and nearby areas, are struggling to arrange cylinders for upcoming wedding functions. Many have urged the District Magistrate and District Supply Officer to ensure at least three commercial cylinders per wedding to avoid disruption in ceremonies.

Officials from the Indane Gas Agency stated that commercial cylinder supply has not yet arrived but is expected soon. Meanwhile, authorities have strictly warned against using domestic LPG cylinders for commercial purposes such as weddings, catering, and events, calling it a punishable offense under the law.

In a partial relief, domestic cylinders were distributed in Purna village after a gap of nearly 24 days. While some consumers received cylinders, others had to return empty-handed due to pending documentation issues. Officials have instructed agencies to ensure timely delivery through vehicles and improve supply management.
