A disturbing situation has emerged at Kedar ghat in Uttarkashi, where stray dogs have been seen feeding on half-burnt human remains along the banks of the Bhagirathi river. The incident has raised serious concerns over sanitation and safety at the cremation site.
According to members associated with Ganga Vichar Manch, the issue is linked to improper disposal of remains after cremation. They alleged that incomplete burning and lack of proper cleanup are leaving body parts exposed, attracting stray dogs to the area. This has not only hurt public sentiments but also created a serious health and safety risk.
Lokendra Bisht, State Convenor of the organization, said that similar scenes were witnessed during the COVID period when restrictions affected cremation processes. However, he pointed out that such negligence continuing under normal conditions is alarming. He stated that groups of stray dogs frequently gather at Kedar ghat and consume the remains left behind.
The Uttarkashi Kedar ghat incident has also triggered fear among residents. It is being claimed that after feeding on human flesh, some of these dogs have become aggressive and are attacking people. Recently, around 18 individuals were reportedly injured in dog bite incidents in the area.
Locals and social groups have urged the administration and municipal authorities to take immediate action. They have demanded a strict cleanliness drive at the cremation site and proper management of stray dogs to prevent further incidents.
