Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami announced on Wednesday that the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) will be implemented in the state from January 2025. The announcement came during a meeting of the Uttarakhand Investment and Infrastructure Development Board (UIIDB) at the state secretariat, where he confirmed that all necessary preparations have been completed.
The Chief Minister recalled that the decision to form an expert committee was made during the first cabinet meeting after the new government was formed in March 2022. A five-member committee headed by retired Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai was established. Based on the committee’s report, the UCC Bill was passed by the State Legislative Assembly on February 7, 2024. Following the President’s assent, the official notification was issued on March 12, 2024.
CM Dhami further stated that the rules and procedures for UCC implementation have been finalized. Personnel training will be conducted to ensure smooth execution. Additionally, a dedicated portal and mobile app have been developed to provide online services and maximize public convenience.
