Pithoragarh witnessed a sudden spell of severe weather on Thursday afternoon as heavy hailstorms lashed the district headquarters and nearby areas, causing widespread damage to crops, vehicles and property.

According to local reports, unusually large hailstones weighing between 100 and 200 grams fell across several parts of the district. The intense hailstorm damaged fruit orchards, vegetables and standing crops, raising concerns among farmers about significant losses.

The hailstones also caused damage to vehicles parked on roads and in open spaces. Several cars suffered broken windshields, shattered windows and damaged headlights. In some areas, window panes of residential buildings were also cracked due to the impact of the hail.

The sudden change in weather disrupted normal life, forcing residents and shopkeepers to take shelter. Traders operating in open markets were unable to secure their goods in time, resulting in damage to merchandise.

Residents said hailstorms have occurred multiple times in Pithoragarh over the past one and a half months, but Thursday’s event was among the most severe. The large hailstones fell with such force that movement on roads came to a halt for a period, creating panic among people caught outdoors.
