Chamoli: Security arrangements have been intensified across Chamoli district following tensions linked to the recent dispute involving Nihangs at Nagarasu Gurdwara in neighbouring Rudraprayag. As a precautionary measure, internet services were suspended from Sunday morning, while police and security agencies have stepped up surveillance at key locations.
Authorities have deployed personnel from the police and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) at Kameda, the main entry point to the district. Security teams are conducting strict checks on vehicles and monitoring the movement of people entering and leaving the area.
Additional police forces have also been stationed at Karnaprayag, Gauchar and other sensitive locations to maintain law and order.
Tension escalated after June 16 incident
The situation stems from a clash between Nihangs and local residents that took place on June 16. The matter has continued to escalate, with social media posts reportedly calling on members of the Sikh community to gather in Karnaprayag on June 21.
The situation became more sensitive after reports of unrest at Nagarasu Gurdwara on Saturday, prompting the administration to strengthen security measures across the region.
Section 163 imposed in the area
In view of the prevailing circumstances, the tehsil administration has imposed Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) across the concerned pargana area to prevent any untoward incident and maintain public order.
Officials said security agencies are closely monitoring developments and appealed to residents not to pay attention to rumours or unverified information circulating on social media.
