A youth allegedly entered MBPG College in Haldwani with a pistol on Wednesday, triggering panic and raising serious questions over security arrangements on the campus. Students caught the suspicious youth and handed him over to the police.
The incident took place amid the atmosphere surrounding student union elections at the college. Repeated disputes and disturbances during election-related activities have already raised concerns over the entry of unwanted elements into the campus.
According to the information available, students became suspicious after noticing the youth inside the college premises. They caught him and reportedly found a pistol in his possession. The incident led to commotion on the campus.
The students first assaulted the youth and then took him to the principal’s office. College authorities informed the police, following which a police team reached the campus and took the youth into custody.
The incident has angered students, who questioned the college administration over the repeated entry of alleged antisocial elements into the premises. Students also surrounded Principal Prof. NS Bankoti and raised concerns about the security of the state’s largest college.
Questions Over Entry Checks
The incident has also brought attention to the college’s entry system. Despite the admission process being almost complete, students alleged that people are still being allowed to enter the campus without checking their identity cards.
Students said the absence of proper entry checks could create security risks, particularly during a period when election-related activities are taking place on the campus.
Principal Prof. NS Bankoti said the pistol recovered from the youth had been handed over to the police. He added that further action was being taken.
The incident has once again put the focus on security arrangements at MBPG College and the need for effective monitoring of people entering the campus.
