Action against madrasas operating without meeting prescribed standards has intensified in Uttarakhand. In Haridwar district, 102 madrasa managers have voluntarily stopped operations amid the ongoing inspection and verification process.
The development comes as the state government continues checking madrasas to determine whether they meet the required standards for recognition and registration. The action is being carried out following the government’s directions under Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami’s administration.
Meanwhile, 76 madrasas in Haridwar have submitted proposals to the Education Department seeking recognition and registration. Of these, preparations are underway to grant recognition to 45 institutions.
Haridwar District Minority Welfare Officer Chandra Prakash Rawat shared the details in a letter sent to the state government. According to the report, 269 madrasas in the district had previously been registered.
However, more than 60 of these madrasas have still not come forward for registration. Physical inspections and verification of these institutions are currently underway.
98 Madrasas Yet to Come Forward
Across Uttarakhand, 452 madrasas were previously operating under the earlier system. The government has so far granted recognition to 35 of them, while 17 madrasas found to be operating illegally have been sealed.
Around 200 madrasas across the state have applied for recognition, according to the Uttarakhand Minority Education Authority.
At the same time, 98 madrasas have neither stopped operations nor come forward for registration. Dr Surjit Singh Gandhi, Chairman of the Uttarakhand Minority Education Authority, confirmed the figures.
The ongoing verification process will determine the status of institutions that have not yet completed the required registration or recognition process.
