Nainital – Tourists visiting Nainital district will no longer be allowed to ride two-wheelers registered as taxis themselves. Such vehicles must be operated by a designated driver, and police have started taking action against vehicles found violating the conditions of their permits.
The enforcement drive was conducted across the district on the directions of SSP Manjunath TC, targeting violations of traffic rules and permit conditions. The campaign was supervised by SP Crime/Traffic Jagdish Chandra, with traffic police, the City Patrol Unit (CPU) and local police stations involved in the action.
During the drive, police issued 258 challans and seized 73 vehicles, including 72 motorcycles. Police said the conditions attached to taxi permits for two-wheelers require a driver to be provided when the vehicle is rented to a tourist.
If a tourist is found riding a permitted taxi motorcycle themselves, it will be treated as a violation of the permit conditions and action will be taken against the concerned vehicle.
Police also initiated action to cancel five driving licences or permits during the campaign. A total of ₹47,000 was collected as compounding fees.
As part of the enforcement, traffic police seized nine vehicles in Haldwani and another nine in the Bhimtal-Bhowali-Kainchi Dham area. CPU Haldwani seized 24 vehicles. Police said the campaign will continue during the tourist season to ensure compliance with traffic rules and permit conditions and to maintain traffic management across the district.
