Dehradun: The Congress high command has stepped up preparations for the 2027 Uttarakhand Assembly elections, directing state leaders to prepare a one-month action plan focused on public issues and alleged failures of the BJP government. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra are also expected to visit Uttarakhand after Diwali.
The strategy was discussed at a meeting held in New Delhi on Monday, where Kharge, Rahul Gandhi and Congress general secretary K.C. Venugopal met party leaders from Uttarakhand. The meeting reviewed the party’s election-related programmes and discussed its preparations for the upcoming Assembly polls.
According to the state Congress leadership, the high command has asked leaders to work together and prepare a month-long action plan. The party’s stated objective is to return to power in Uttarakhand in 2027.
State in-charge Kumari Selja said the BJP government had failed on key issues, including law and order, education, healthcare, women’s safety, unemployment and migration. She claimed that people were seeking a change in the state and said the Congress would continue to raise public concerns.
Selja also said the party was committed to fighting for the rights and dignity of the people of Uttarakhand. She accused the state government of pursuing policies that had affected the public and said the Congress would campaign against them.
State Congress president Ganesh Godiyal said the high command was closely monitoring preparations for the Assembly elections. He added that the party would strengthen its organisation and contest the polls collectively under the high command’s guidance.
The state Congress has also sought time from Kharge, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra to hold a rally in Uttarakhand. The high command is expected to decide the date for the proposed event.
Several senior leaders attended the meeting, including state co-in-charges Surendra Sharma and Manoj Yadav, Leader of Opposition Yashpal Arya, election campaign committee chairman Pritam Singh and election management committee chairman Harak Singh Rawat.
The Congress is expected to announce further election-related programmes after the high command finalises the proposed rally and the state unit’s action plan.
