Electricity tariffs in Uttarakhand are expected to increase significantly next year. Uttarakhand Power Corporation Limited (UPCL) has proposed a 12% tariff hike and submitted the proposal to the Uttarakhand Electricity Regulatory Commission for approval. The commission will review the proposal and follow all necessary procedures before implementation.
Delay in Proposal Submission Due to Financial Adjustments
The proposal, originally due by November 30, was delayed due to adjustments related to an outstanding amount of ₹4,300 crore. The regulatory commission extended the deadline to December 26. On Thursday, UPCL’s board approved the tariff hike proposal.
New Tariffs Effective from April 2025
The regulatory commission is now reviewing the proposal. After the review, public hearings will be conducted to gather feedback from consumers. Based on these suggestions, the commission will finalize the new tariffs, which are set to be implemented from April 1, 2025.
Electricity Costs May Rise Over 15%
In addition to UPCL’s 12% hike, UJVNL and PTCUL have also proposed tariff revisions. UJVNL has suggested increasing its tariff from ₹2.33 to ₹2.83 per unit. The combined impact of these proposals could result in an overall increase of more than 15% in electricity costs.
UPCL MD Anil Kumar confirmed that the tariff hike proposal has been submitted to the commission, which will make the final decision.
