A meeting of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on the Waqf Amendment Bill 2024 was held in Lucknow on Tuesday. Representatives from the Muslim community expressed concerns over the bill’s provisions and submitted a 20-point memorandum. The memorandum opposed proposals to reduce Waqf Board powers, increase district magistrates’ authority, include non-Muslim members in the Waqf Board, and abolish the election process.
Community leaders, including Maulana Khalid Rashid Firangi Mahli, argued that the bill could undermine the protection and management of Waqf properties. They voiced strong objections, stating that these changes would jeopardize the religious properties’ sanctity and security.
JPC member and Rajya Sabha MP Brijlal stated that this visit marked the committee’s final round of consultations. All stakeholder suggestions will be forwarded to Committee Chairperson Jagdambika Pal. Representatives from the Uttar Pradesh Minority Welfare Department and other concerned departments also participated in the meeting.
