The effects of climate change are becoming increasingly evident in Uttarakhand’s hilly regions. In areas like Dhaulchhina and Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary, Buransh flowers, which usually bloom in March, have blossomed in the first half of January. Additionally, Kaafal (Bayberry), a seasonal fruit, is ripening earlier than expected.
Experts Warn of Ecological Imbalance
Botanists attribute this shift to altered weather patterns. This winter has seen only two days of rainfall, with most of the season remaining dry. The lack of snowfall and precipitation is affecting the biodiversity of the mountains.
Dr. Dhani Arya, Head of the Botany Department, stated that premature flowering and fruiting indicate climate change. Reduced rainfall and snowfall are creating warmer conditions, leading to an unnatural growth cycle in plants. This environmental imbalance and increasing pollution pose serious concerns.
