Cracks Appear in 35 Houses in Almora’s Lweta Village, Four Collapse; Administration Orders Probe

Village Uttarakhand

A situation similar to Joshimath is unfolding in Lweta village of Almora district, where cracks have appeared in 35 houses, and four homes have already collapsed in the past month. The crisis has forced several families to live in tents, while others have taken shelter with relatives.

Rising Concerns Among Villagers

Residents of Lweta village in Bhainsiyachhana block met District Magistrate Alok Kumar Pandey on Thursday to report the alarming situation. They recalled a similar incident in 2010 when cracks developed in the village, leading to the collapse of six houses. At that time, the administration provided compensation to some affected families. Now, over 350 people in the village are once again at risk.

The land subsidence has also disrupted the village’s water supply. While residents demand relocation to a safer location, they say they lack the financial resources to rebuild homes despite having land.

DM Alok Kumar Pandey has directed the SDM to conduct an immediate on-site inspection and take necessary action. A disaster management team will also assess the situation.
