Uttarkashi – With the opening of the Gangotri Temple doors, tourists will soon be allowed to visit Gaumukh. The Gangotri National Park authorities have cleared the approximately 18-kilometer-long trekking route for movement. Tourism department staff have been granted permission to proceed to their centers and are expected to leave by Monday.
While the Gangotri National Park gates opened on April 1, access to Gartang Gali and Nelang was granted earlier. However, trekking to Gaumukh was delayed due to large glaciers blocking the trail at eight locations, causing financial losses to trekking businesses. Although efforts were made to clear the path in mid-April, poor weather initially hampered progress.

Once the weather improved, workers braved sub-zero temperatures to restore the Gangotri-Gaumukh trail. Range Officer Pradeep Bisht confirmed that a team from the Kankhu barrier inspected the trek route last Friday and reported that the path is now fully operational.
From April 30, tourists will be permitted to trek to Gaumukh with official approval, while tourism center staff have already been granted access.
