Canada Welcomes PM Modi to G7 Summit

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the upcoming G7 summit hosted by Canada, despite India not being a member of the group. PM Modi has accepted the invitation and confirmed his participation. In response, Canadian political leaders have expressed support for the move, hailing it as a step toward improving strained bilateral ties.

Dallas Brodie, a lawyer and Member of the Legislative Assembly from British Columbia, called the invitation “wonderful news” and emphasized the deep connections between the two nations, especially given Canada’s large Indian diaspora. He added that mending ties with India is vital for Canada’s future trade and diplomatic interests, noting India’s educated population and vast market as key assets.

When asked about the issue of Khalistani extremism—a key point of tension in India-Canada relations—Brodie admitted it remains a serious problem. “There’s no doubt that both Hindu and Sikh communities in Canada are unhappy with the current situation,” he said, adding that it’s time for the federal government to take stronger action. Brodie hopes the meeting between Indian and Canadian leaders will address this concern head-on.
