Uttarakhand Panchayats: Administrator tenure extended again, ward member seats still vacant

The tenure of administrators in Uttarakhand’s three-tier panchayat system has been extended once again until formal panchayat bodies are constituted. District Magistrates will continue as administrators for district panchayats, SDMs for block-level panchayats, and village development officers (VDOs) for gram panchayats.

While panchayat elections have been completed in all 12 districts except Haridwar, the first official meetings of the newly elected bodies are still pending. A key reason is the large number of vacant ward member positions in gram panchayats, despite the election of gram pradhans (village heads). Due to these unfilled ward seats, the panchayat formation process remains incomplete.

The previous term of the appointed administrators ended on July 31, prompting this latest extension to maintain administrative continuity in local governance.
