India-South Korea Ties: Foreign Ministers Jaishankar and Hyun Emphasize Stronger Cooperation

South Korea’s Foreign Minister Cho Hyun arrived in India on his first official visit and held talks with External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar in New Delhi. The visit comes a day after India’s Independence Day and Korea’s National Liberation Day, highlighting the importance both nations attach to their ties.

Welcoming Hyun, Dr. Jaishankar described it as a “special privilege” to host an old friend as a new partner. He congratulated him on assuming office and extended greetings on Korea’s National Liberation Day. Jaishankar underlined that this year marks the 10th anniversary of the Special Strategic Partnership between India and South Korea.

The two ministers discussed avenues to take bilateral ties to greater heights, including political dialogue, economic cooperation, cultural exchanges, and security collaboration. Jaishankar expressed gratitude to South Korea for condemning the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam and appreciated Seoul’s engagement with the Indian parliamentary delegation that visited South Korea earlier.

Hyun conveyed condolences for the recent floods in Kashmir and expressed solidarity on behalf of the Korean people. He noted his delight in visiting India within a month of assuming charge, thanking Jaishankar for the warm welcome and congratulatory messages received through calls, letters, and social media.

Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening relations, with discussions expected to pave the way for deeper cooperation in trade, technology, defense, and people-to-people ties.
