Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Manipur on Saturday, where he will launch and lay the foundation stone for projects worth over ₹8,500 crore. Ahead of his visit, clashes broke out on Thursday evening between miscreants and security forces in Churachandpur district, a region dominated by the Kuki community.
According to Chief Secretary Punit Kumar Goel, the Prime Minister will first arrive in Churachandpur from Mizoram before heading to Imphal. He will lay the foundation stone for projects worth more than ₹7,300 crore and inaugurate projects worth over ₹1,200 crore. Modi will also meet internally displaced persons in Churachandpur and Imphal.
Security measures have been intensified in both cities, with heavy deployment around the historic Kangla Fort in Imphal and the Peace Ground in Churachandpur, where a grand stage is being set up. Central and state forces are conducting 24-hour inspections, and disaster management boats are patrolling the fort’s surrounding moats.
This will be Modi’s first visit to Manipur since ethnic violence between Kuki and Meitei communities erupted in May 2023, which left over 250 people dead and thousands displaced. The state government hopes the visit will help restore peace and stability.
