Uttarakhand to Add 1,800 Nursing Seats in Government Medical and Nursing Colleges

Dehradun: The Uttarakhand government is set to increase 1,800 nursing seats across state-run medical and nursing colleges to strengthen healthcare education and address workforce demand. The High-Powered Committee constituted for nursing education has approved the proposal to enhance the intake capacity.

For the first time, a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) will also be introduced to regulate and streamline the operation of nursing courses in the state. The decision was taken during a meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Anand Bardhan at the Secretariat on Friday.

The committee approved the Medical Education Department’s proposal to add seats across 39 training institutions, including five government medical colleges and eleven government nursing colleges. Private paramedical colleges in the state also run B.Sc. Nursing and GNM programs.

Currently, 9,804 seats are approved for B.Sc. Nursing and GNM programs across Uttarakhand. With the proposed expansion, the total number of training opportunities is expected to rise significantly. Chief Secretary Bardhan also directed the implementation of a single-window system for processing institutional applications, eliminating multiple levels of scrutiny.
