The merit list for the recruitment of 1,670 primary teachers in Uttarakhand has not been released even eight days after counselling, raising concerns among candidates awaiting appointment. Officials have said delays in finalising district-wise lists are holding up the process.
Counselling for the recruitment was conducted simultaneously across all districts on January 12, following directions from Education Minister Dr Dhan Singh Rawat. Around 61,000 candidates had applied for the 1,670 vacant posts. However, counselling sessions in several districts witnessed protests and disruptions.
Candidates alleged irregularities during counselling, claiming that applicants with lower merit were being considered, while those with higher scores were excluded from selection. These allegations intensified demands for transparency in the preparation of the merit list.
Education department officials said the merit list is still under preparation in some districts. According to Additional Director of Elementary Education Padmendra Saklani, districts including Dehradun, Haridwar, and one other district have not yet completed the process of finalising their lists.
He stated that appointment letters would be issued as soon as the pending district merit lists are received and consolidated. Officials, however, did not provide a clear timeline for the release, adding to uncertainty among candidates.

The delay has once again highlighted administrative challenges in large-scale recruitments, especially when allegations of merit-related discrepancies emerge during counselling.
