Auli – A cleanliness drive has intensified in Auli following the National Skiing Championship and Winter Carnival, with authorities removing 13 quintals of plastic waste from the snow-covered slopes. The campaign is being jointly conducted by the Winter Games Association of Uttarakhand and the Jyotirmath Municipal Council to restore the area’s natural landscape.

The events, held from February 13 to 16, drew more than 15,000 visitors to Auli. Tourist movement remained concentrated around the Nanda Devi slope and up to the old slope near Tower No. 10. After the conclusion of the championship and carnival, plastic litter was found scattered across several sections of the meadow.

Officials stated that the collected waste has been transported to the Municipal Council’s Material Recovery Facility (MRF) centre in Jyotirmath. Ajay Bhatt, Joint Secretary of the Winter Games Association of Uttarakhand, said the waste collection process began immediately after the events concluded.

Municipal Chairperson Deveshwari Shah confirmed that teams are continuing the cleanup across the Auli region to ensure plastic waste is safely removed and processed. The scale of waste generated during a short event period has once again raised concerns about crowd management and environmental safeguards at high-altitude tourist destinations.

While winter sports events boost tourism and the local economy, the aftermath highlights the need for stricter waste control mechanisms and visitor awareness to protect fragile Himalayan ecosystems.
