The Asian Development Bank (ADB) will extend financial assistance of USD 126.42 million (over ₹11,000 crore) as a loan to support tourism development in the Tehri Lake region. A loan agreement between the Government of India and ADB was signed in New Delhi to promote sustainable tourism in Uttarakhand.
The state government aims to transform Tehri Lake and its surrounding areas into an international tourist destination. To implement this project, the Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance, signed the agreement with ADB for funding.
Under the tourism development project, several tourism-related activities will be introduced in Tehri, one of Uttarakhand’s most climate-sensitive and economically disadvantaged regions. The initiative will focus on providing advanced infrastructure, improved sanitation, solid waste management, and better facilities for visitors. The project is expected to benefit over 87,000 locals and around 2.7 million tourists annually.
The agreement was signed by Juhi Mukherjee, Joint Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs, and Kai Wei Yeo, Officer-in-Charge of ADB in India. Mukherjee said that with ADB’s support, Tehri Lake will be developed into a versatile, all-season tourist destination. Yeo added that the project will promote sustainable tourism while boosting local employment opportunities.
