The annual Amarnath Yatra in Jammu and Kashmir will commence from July 3 and continue for 38 days via both the Pahalgam and Baltal routes. In light of recent terrorist activity, particularly the attack near Pahalgam, security for this year’s yatra has been intensified to a level comparable with the protection once given to US/NATO military convoys in Afghanistan.
Over 80,000 personnel from the Indian Army, CRPF, BSF, SSB, CISF, ITBP, and J&K Police have been deployed to ensure foolproof safety for pilgrims. To counter potential fidayeen attacks, a multi-layered security shield has been created along the yatra routes. The aim is to prevent any militant infiltration or sabotage attempt along the pilgrimage corridors.
Terror Threat and Counter-Strategy
Intelligence reports suggest that around 50 Pakistani terrorists are believed to be hiding in J&K. In addition, local sleeper cells tied to Pakistan-backed terror outfits are also active. Responding to these threats, Indian security agencies have jointly formulated a comprehensive protection plan.
Sensitive points along the mountainous and river-crossing paths have been fortified. Surveillance is being maintained through drones, CCTV cameras, and long-range binoculars. CRPF will escort all pilgrim convoys, and Road Opening Parties (ROPs) have been deployed throughout the route.
Military-Grade Measures on the Yatra Route
Just like military convoys in Afghanistan, sections of the road will be temporarily shut down when yatra convoys pass, preventing civilian vehicle movement until the convoy has cleared the area. Selected road sections may be entirely closed to opposite-direction traffic when required.
CAPF units have been trained specifically to counter fidayeen-style attacks. Over 50,000 paramilitary troops are being posted solely for route security. The deployment pattern has also been modified — now personnel will be stationed at every 500 to 1,000 meters, with tighter spacing in highly sensitive areas. Bulletproof marksmen, dog squads, and handheld CCTV cameras will be used extensively. Anti-drone and anti-missile precautions have also been incorporated after intelligence alerts indicated threats of aerial explosives.
According to a senior official, “Pilgrims need not worry. The level of security and readiness for this year’s Amarnath Yatra is unprecedented. Every possible measure has been taken to ensure their safety.”
