Board exams near, teachers on SIR duty raise questions over classroom priorities

Uttarakhand – With Uttarakhand Board practical examinations approaching, the deployment of teachers for Special Intensive Revision duties has triggered concern within the education community. Teachers say the timing has added pressure when schools are expected to focus fully on completing the syllabus.

Former state general secretary of the Government Teachers’ Association, Dr Sohan Majila, said that three to four teachers from the same school have been assigned SIR work related to voter list revision. He said this has reduced classroom presence at a critical stage of the academic session.

According to the association, teachers are facing pressure from authorities to complete the remaining syllabus for students preparing for board exams, while simultaneously being diverted to non-academic work. The situation has raised questions about how schools are expected to balance examination preparation with administrative duties.

Teachers have expressed resentment, pointing out that earlier government orders had clearly stated that teachers should not be assigned non-teaching tasks. Despite this, they claim the instructions are not being followed on the ground.

Education Minister Dr Dhan Singh Rawat said the issue has been taken into account. He stated that directions will be issued to district magistrates to ensure that students’ studies are not affected due to SIR duties. However, teachers say clarity and timely action remain crucial as exams draw closer.
