Dehradun, October 22, 2024: The Dehradun Municipal Corporation has completed 90% of the task of installing unique ID plates on buildings across the city. Starting in November, waste disposal, sorting, and septage management will be monitored through a mobile app. This new system will streamline the city’s waste and septage management processes by integrating digital building numbers for both residential and commercial properties.
As part of the Swachh Survekshan 2024-25, this initiative marks a significant step forward for Vikasnagar’s municipal operations. The city, which houses 6,400 buildings—including 4,500 residential and 1,900 commercial properties—collects approximately 15 metric tons of waste daily. However, only 70% of waste from residential buildings and 40% from commercial properties is collected, highlighting the need for better waste management practices.
A city-wide digital survey was conducted, and following its completion, buildings were assigned unique ID numbers and QR code plates. Once fully implemented, workers will scan these QR codes while collecting waste, ensuring that dry and wet waste is properly segregated. Buildings that fail to segregate their waste will be flagged for corrective action.

In addition to waste disposal, the app will track the status of septic tanks. Building owners will be notified when their tanks are nearing capacity, and the municipality will offer on-site septic tank emptying services for a fixed fee. According to BP Bhatt, Executive Officer of Vikasnagar Municipality, 90% of the unique ID plate installation is complete, and the app-based system will be operational by the first week of November.
