Dehradun: The Forest Department, in collaboration with Pahadi Peddlers, organized a wildlife awareness campaign at Dehradun Zoo on Sunday to mark World Snake Day (July 16). The initiative aimed to educate the public about snake conservation, wildlife protection, and the importance of preserving local biodiversity through a cycle rally and interactive awareness sessions.
The awareness ride began from Ghanta Ghar and concluded at Dehradun Zoo, where participants attended an educational session conducted by snake expert Pravesh Kumar. He explained the ecological importance of snakes, introduced participants to different snake species found in the region, and addressed common myths surrounding them. He emphasized that most snakes are non-venomous and do not pose a threat to humans. He also advised people to avoid harming snakes and instead contact the Forest Department or trained snake rescue teams if a snake is spotted.
Forest officials also conducted a guided session at the zoo, providing information about the natural habitats, feeding habits, behavior, and ecological significance of various wildlife species. The session encouraged participants to understand the crucial role wildlife plays in maintaining ecological balance.
Young participants, including 15-year-olds Satyam and Aditya, actively interacted with experts, asked questions about wildlife, and showed keen interest in learning about biodiversity and conservation.
Forest Range Officer Diksha Bhatt said that public participation is essential for wildlife conservation, adding that awareness programmes help people connect with nature and develop a sense of responsibility towards protecting wildlife.
Deputy Divisional Forest Officer Abhishek Mathani said the Forest Department regularly conducts such awareness initiatives to help people better understand nature and wildlife. He also appreciated the contribution of organizations like Pahadi Peddlers in spreading environmental awareness among the public.
Pahadi Peddlers organizes weekly cycling events under its “Doon Pedal Tales (DPT)” initiative, focusing on environmental conservation, biodiversity, local history, and nature awareness. These rides encourage people to explore and appreciate the region’s natural heritage while promoting sustainable lifestyles.
The programme was attended by Pahadi Peddlers founder Gajendra Ramola along with Saurabh Negi, Chandni Arora, Deepak Mittal, Rahul Kochgave, Pradeep Singh Negi, Sanjay Kumar, Rehan Siddiqui, Devansh, Debu Thapa, Satyam, Aarav, and several other cycling enthusiasts.
