Uttarakhand is gearing up for the Chardham Yatra 2025, with the government taking significant steps to ensure the health and safety of pilgrims. The sacred journey to the four Himalayan shrines will commence with the opening of Gangotri and Yamunotri on April 30, followed by Kedarnath on May 2 and Badrinath on May 4. To minimize health risks and provide adequate medical assistance, the state has issued health advisories in 12 languages, ensuring pilgrims from across the country receive clear guidelines.
Comprehensive Health Measures for Pilgrims
Health Secretary Dr. R. Rajesh Kumar stated that under the leadership of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and Health Minister Dr. Dhan Singh Rawat, special attention is being given to the health infrastructure along the pilgrimage route. Recognizing the geographical and climatic challenges faced by devotees, the government has launched multilingual health advisories and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to spread awareness about necessary precautions.
These advisories will be distributed through various communication channels across all states. Health secretaries have been requested to promote medical check-ups, health monitoring, and physical preparedness campaigns for prospective pilgrims. This initiative aims to reduce health emergencies, especially in high-altitude areas where oxygen levels are low, and weather conditions are unpredictable.
Voluntary Medical Services from Other States
In a significant move, the Uttarakhand Health Department has invited doctors and medical specialists from other states to provide voluntary services during the Chardham Yatra. Specialists in cardiology, orthopedics, and general medicine will be encouraged to serve at hospitals along the pilgrimage route for at least 15 days. This collaborative effort will ensure that adequate medical expertise is available at all times, improving emergency response capacity.
Health Secretary Dr. Rajesh Kumar emphasized that the voluntary service would not only enhance healthcare access for pilgrims but also offer doctors a chance to contribute to public service in a meaningful way.
Screening Points and Emergency Services
To ensure early detection of health issues, the government will set up screening points at key locations where pilgrims’ vital parameters, including blood pressure, sugar levels, and oxygen saturation, will be checked. Emergency medical services will also be made available along the route, with strategically located health relief posts and helipad facilities for air evacuation if necessary.
The number of medical relief points has been increased, and experienced doctors, paramedics, and health volunteers will be deployed. For enhanced convenience, free health screenings will be provided at health ATMs installed at locations like Guptkashi, Phata, Gaurikund, and Narayankoti. These machines will measure essential health metrics such as blood pressure, oxygen levels, and body temperature.
Telemedicine Support and 24/7 Assistance
In addition to on-site medical support, telemedicine services will be made available along the pilgrimage route. Through these services, pilgrims will have access to 24/7 consultations with experienced doctors, ensuring timely medical advice in case of emergencies.
Health Awareness Campaigns and Advisory Details
As part of the awareness drive, informative materials, including “Dos and Don’ts” for high-altitude travel, will be circulated across states. District authorities have been directed to distribute these materials to ensure maximum outreach. Pilgrims are strongly advised to follow the issued guidelines for a safer and healthier journey.
Key recommendations include:
- Undergoing a mandatory health check-up before starting the journey.
- Practicing walking, breathing exercises, and light physical activities at least two months prior to the trip.
- Carrying prescribed medications and sufficient water to stay hydrated.
- Dressing in layered, warm clothing to combat cold temperatures.
- Using health registration and medical apps for assistance.
Special Focus on Kedarnath Route
Health Secretary Dr. Rajesh Kumar noted that the Kedarnath Yatra route poses significant challenges due to steep climbs and low oxygen levels. To address this, 10 medical relief posts and two Primary Health Centers (PHCs) will be established along the route. Helicopter evacuation facilities will also be kept on standby for emergencies.
Commitment to Safe and Secure Pilgrimage
With the implementation of these proactive measures, the Uttarakhand government is committed to ensuring a smooth, secure, and accessible Chardham Yatra in 2025. Pilgrims are urged to follow all health guidelines, prioritize their well-being, and seek immediate medical assistance if required.
