IMD to Provide Forest Fire Forecasts Along with Predictions

In a first-of-its-kind initiative, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) will soon start forecasting forest fire risks in addition to its rainfall and extreme weather predictions. The department is set to sign an MoU with the Forest Department, enhancing preparedness and response to wildfire outbreaks.

Key Features of the Initiative

  • Currently, the Forest Survey of India (FSI) provides fire alerts, but IMD will generate customized bulletins based on temperature, humidity, and dryness levels to predict fire-prone areas.
  • GPS tracking will be installed in fire-fighting vehicles, allowing officials to monitor real-time movement.
  • Under the World Bank’s ‘U-Prepare’ scheme, forest personnel will receive fire-resistant gear and additional resources.

Collaboration for Better Fire Management

  • IMD Dehradun Director Bikram Singh confirmed that discussions have been held with the Forest Department to integrate fire risk predictions with weather forecasts.
  • Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Dhananjay Mohan, stated that the MoU’s formalities have been completed, paving the way for enhanced fire management strategies.

This initiative aims to strengthen wildfire control efforts across India, ensuring quicker response and effective disaster mitigation.
