MHA Orders Nationwide Mock Drill on May 7, Civil Defense Training for Students and Citizens

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has directed all states to conduct a civil defense mock drill on May 7 to strengthen public preparedness for emergency situations. According to central government sources, the drill will include critical safety measures such as air raid sirens, blackout implementation, and evacuation plan rehearsals. Citizens, especially students, will be trained to protect themselves in case of potential attacks.

The drill will also focus on concealing strategic facilities and ensuring quick response mechanisms are in place. These measures aim to build awareness and readiness among civilians in the event of warlike or terror-related emergencies.

This directive comes in the wake of the recent deadly terror attack in Pahalgam, South Kashmir, where 26 individuals—mostly tourists—were brutally killed. In response, tensions between India and Pakistan have escalated significantly. India has taken several stern actions, including suspending the Indus Waters Treaty, reducing staff at the Pakistani High Commission, halting all categories of postal services, and shutting down the Attari checkpost.

The Government of India has empowered the armed forces to respond at their discretion and has received cross-party political backing for any retaliatory action. A Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) meeting confirmed the cross-border linkage of the Pahalgam attack. Additionally, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry has issued a notification banning all imports and transits of goods from Pakistan, effectively halting bilateral trade.
