Nepal Floods Renew Kedarnath Disaster Concerns, 13 High-Risk Glacial Lakes Identified in Uttarakhand

Uttarakhand: The devastating floods in Nepal have renewed concerns about disaster preparedness in Himalayan states such as Uttarakhand. The incident has also highlighted the importance of accurate early warning systems and timely evacuation mechanisms in areas vulnerable to glacial lake outburst floods.

Experts have identified 13 potentially high-risk glacial lakes across five Uttarakhand districts — Pithoragarh, Chamoli, Uttarkashi, Bageshwar and Tehri. These lakes have also been placed in a higher-risk category by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).

Scientific studies of the identified glacial lakes are currently being carried out to assess the potential risks they pose. The developments in Nepal have once again brought attention to the vulnerability of Himalayan settlements located downstream of glaciers and glacial lakes.

Kedarnath Disaster Still a Reminder

The concerns have particular significance for Uttarakhand because of the June 2013 Kedarnath disaster.

On June 16-17, 2013, the breach of Chorabari Tal triggered a massive flood that devastated Kedarnath. Except for the Kedarnath Temple, much of Kedarpuri was buried under debris.

The disaster claimed around 6,000 lives and remains one of the most severe natural disasters in Uttarakhand’s recent history.

Nepal Disaster Raises Early Warning Concerns

A sudden flood following a glacial event in Nepal on August 26 has further highlighted the challenges of predicting and responding to such disasters in the Himalayan region.

According to the information provided, the disaster has so far resulted in 1,127 deaths, while more than 4,800 people remain missing. Search and rescue operations are continuing in the affected areas.

For Uttarakhand, the incident has underlined the need to strengthen early warning systems, scientific monitoring and evacuation preparedness in areas located downstream of vulnerable glacial lakes.

Uttarakhand Has Hundreds of Glacial Lakes

The lakes are spread across several river basins, with the Alaknanda Basin accounting for 635, followed by the Bhagirathi Basin with 306 and the Gori Ganga Basin with 92.

Other identified basins include Dhauli Ganga, Kuti Yangti, Tons, Yamuna, Bhilangana, Mandakini and Pindari.

Glacial Lakes Identified as Potentially Dangerous

Among the lakes identified as posing higher risks are Vasudhara and Saraswati Tal in Chamoli, Kedar Tal in Uttarkashi, Nagkund in Bageshwar, Mabhang, Pyungru and Syuntiyankti in Pithoragarh, and Masuri Tal in Tehri, along with other lakes.

The presence of potentially hazardous glacial lakes makes continuous scientific assessment important. For Uttarakhand, the challenge is not limited to identifying vulnerable lakes. Effective monitoring, reliable early warnings and clearly defined evacuation plans are equally important to reduce the impact of any sudden flood event.
