The Uttarakhand government inspected more than 700 madrasas following Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami’s orders, but an RTI has revealed that neither the administration nor the minority welfare department has any clear rules or provisions for such checks. The information was obtained by Kashipur-based advocate and RTI activist Nadeem Uddin, who had sought copies of rules regarding inspection and sealing of madrasas. Departments admitted no such provisions exist.
According to official data, the CM’s orders were issued on December 19, 2024, after a news report highlighted unregistered madrasas. District magistrates were instructed on December 23 to form committees and complete inspections within ten days. Reports show 680 madrasas were inspected across eight districts — 410 were registered or recognized, while 270 were unregistered or unrecognized. None were found involved in illegal or suspicious activities.
District-wise details show: Haridwar inspected 328 madrasas (259 recognized, 69 unrecognized), Udham Singh Nagar 237 (112 recognized, 125 unrecognized), Dehradun 93 (36 registered, 57 unregistered), Almora 16 (all unrecognized), Pithoragarh three (one registered, two unregistered), and Tehri Garhwal three (two registered, one unregistered). No madrasas were found in Rudraprayag and Chamoli.
