Dehradun/Haridwar: As part of Uttarakhand’s silver jubilee foundation celebrations, Sports Minister Rekha Arya inaugurated multiple state-level tournaments in Dehradun and Haridwar, calling on athletes to become brand ambassadors for the state through their talent and discipline.
In Dehradun, the four-day State-Level Under-17 Boys Football Tournament began at Pavilion Ground, featuring 16 teams — including squads from 12 districts, two sports colleges, and two sports hostels. During the inauguration, Rekha Arya said Uttarakhand has long been known for its spiritual heritage, but now it must also be recognized for its sporting achievements. “Our athletes should perform in a way that makes Uttarakhand known as a land of champions,” she said.

The minister added that the government is committed to making Devbhoomi a true Khel Bhoomi, ensuring that athletes receive full support. She mentioned that medal winners are being offered four percent reservation in government jobs, out-of-turn employment, and substantial cash rewards. “The government now takes responsibility for the careers and futures of young sportspersons,” Arya stated.
The opening match was inaugurated with a ceremonial coin toss and kickoff by the minister. Six matches were played on the first day, with District Sports Officer Ravindra Bhandari, footballer Rajendra Singh Rawat, and several coaches and officials in attendance.
In Haridwar, Rekha Arya inaugurated the State-Level Hockey Championship at the Vandana Katariya Hockey Stadium in Roshnabad, where 14 teams from across the state are competing. Addressing the athletes, she urged them to aim for excellence and help make India a sporting superpower. She also encouraged players to begin preparing for the 2036 Olympics, which could be hosted in India.

A traditional Pitthu exhibition match was also organized during the event, showcasing Uttarakhand’s local sporting heritage.
Rekha Arya later inaugurated the Hemlata Kohli Memorial Uttarakhand State Table Tennis Championship at the Multipurpose Yogasthali Sports Complex in Roshnabad. She encouraged young players to take advantage of the improved sports infrastructure and training opportunities being provided across the state.
