Shrinagar Pandula-Maikhadi road accident

A fatal accident on the Rishikesh-Gangotri Highway claimed the life of a woman near Nagni market, highlighting ongoing concerns over road safety on the busy route. The Rishikesh-Gangotri Highway accident occurred when a speeding bike hit the woman while she was crossing the road.

According to police, the deceased has been identified as 52-year-old Surma Devi, a resident of Jajal of Nepali origin. She had come to Nagni with her son and was waiting to board a bus around 12:30 pm. As a bus approached from Chamba towards Rishikesh, she attempted to cross the road.

During this time, a motorcycle coming from Dehradun towards Bhagirathipuram at high speed struck her. The bike was being driven by Shivam Chamoli (19), who is reportedly a BCom student in Dehradun. The impact threw the woman to a distance, causing critical injuries.

Police from Nagni outpost rushed to the spot and shifted the injured woman to the sub-district hospital in Narendra Nagar, where doctors declared her dead. The biker also sustained injuries to his leg and is currently undergoing treatment at the same hospital.

Officials said no formal complaint has been filed yet by the family members of the deceased. Preliminary investigation suggests that the accident occurred due to high speed and lack of caution while crossing the road.

The Rishikesh-Gangotri Highway accident has once again raised questions over traffic regulation and pedestrian safety on hill highways, where increasing vehicle movement continues to pose risks for locals.
