New Delhi: The Supreme Court has issued a stern directive to the Maharashtra government, mandating the disbursement of compensation to farmers by January 31, 2025. A bench comprising Justice Surya Kant and Justice N. Koteshwar Singh warned that failure to comply within the stipulated timeline would result in contempt proceedings.
Case Background
The issue dates back to 2005 when land was acquired from farmers in Jambhalkhori Borphadi, Beed district, for constructing a water tank under the Employment Guarantee Scheme. Despite previous orders, the farmers have not received their compensation of ₹1.49 crore.
Strict Action Against Officials
The court directed the Principal Secretary, Finance Secretary, Panchayati Raj Secretary, and the Beed Collector to resolve the matter within a week and ensure compensation reaches the farmers.
Contempt Warning
The bench emphasized that any failure to pay by the deadline would lead to the Registrar General of the Bombay High Court initiating contempt proceedings. Additionally, a penalty of ₹1 lakh per official could be personally recovered for non-compliance.
This ruling reinforces the Supreme Court’s commitment to upholding farmers’ rights and ensuring timely justice.
