PK’s Arrest: Hunger Strike, Protests, and Dramatic Release

Patna: Political tensions escalated in Bihar following the arrest of Jan Suraaj founder Prashant Kishor (PK), who was on a hunger strike since January 2 in support of BPSC aspirants. Patna police arrested him for obstructing official duties and holding protests without permission, parading him for six hours before presenting him in court.

In a dramatic turn, PK refused to accept bail on any condition. The court initially ordered his release on a personal bond of ₹25,000, but due to his refusal, he was sent to jail. Subsequently, the court modified its order, and he was released. However, PK announced he would continue his hunger strike while in jail.

Statewide Protests

PK’s arrest triggered widespread protests across Bihar, with demonstrations reported in Patna, Saharsa, Gaya, Aurangabad, and Samastipur. Protesters in Aurangabad burned effigies of CM Nitish Kumar, while Saharsa witnessed a massive opposition rally. In Samastipur, Jan Suraaj supporters staged a candle march condemning the arrest.

PK’s Statement

Speaking from jail, PK criticized the Bihar government, stating, “In Bihar, raising the voice of youth and women results in action against you.” He reaffirmed his commitment to the hunger strike and vowed to continue the movement for students’ rights until its goals are achieved.
