Breakthrough Achieved in Silkyara Tunnel in Presence of CM Dhami, 25 km Shorter Route to Connect Gangotri and Yamunotri

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Wednesday participated in the breakthrough ceremony of the Silkyara Tunnel — a crucial project under the Char Dham Yatra. The 4.531 km double-lane tunnel, built at a cost of approximately ₹1,384 crore, will reduce the travel distance between Gangotri and Yamunotri Dham by about 25 km, significantly improving convenience for pilgrims and reducing travel time.

In 2023, the tunnel had made headlines when 41 workers were trapped inside for 17 days during its construction. They were successfully rescued through one of the most complex rescue operations in the world, led under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Dhami.

Speaking at the event, CM Dhami congratulated all engineers, technical experts, and workers involved in the project. He called the breakthrough a symbol of advanced engineering and the strength of collective human resolve. He praised the rescue operation, stating that it was a true test of both technology and humanity, with every participant setting an example of courage and teamwork. He also thanked the entire rescue team, rat miners, NDRF, SDRF, and supporting agencies.

The Chief Minister noted that global attention was focused on the rescue, and with the full support of the central government and use of cutting-edge global resources, the mission was accomplished. He highlighted the patience shown by the trapped workers, which boosted everyone’s morale throughout the ordeal.

CM Participates in Temple Consecration, Honors Promise Made During Rescue

On the same day, CM Dhami also took part in the consecration ceremony at the Baba Baukhnag Temple near the tunnel. He had earlier vowed to construct a temple in honor of Baba Baukhnag during the rescue mission. As part of this commitment, he brought offerings and worship materials from his home in Dehradun. He shared that when the idol of Baba Baukhnag was placed at the tunnel entrance, a breakthrough was achieved shortly afterward — a moment that inspired faith and determination during the crisis.
