Supreme Court Eases Restrictions on Old Vehicles in Delhi-NCR

The Supreme Court has provided significant relief to owners of older vehicles in Delhi-NCR by temporarily halting strict enforcement against them. The order applies to diesel vehicles over 10 years old and petrol vehicles over 15 years old.

A bench led by Chief Justice B.R. Gavai, along with Justices K. Vinod Chandran and N.V. Anjaria, directed that no coercive measures should be taken against these vehicle owners for now. The decision followed a request by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Delhi government, urging the court to prevent immediate punitive action.

The court issued a notice and sought responses within four weeks. In the meantime, it instructed that enforcement against such vehicles be suspended. The Delhi government had petitioned the court, arguing that a complete ban on these vehicles was unreasonable and disproportionate.
