The Trinamool Congress has decided to boycott the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) formed to examine three key bills concerning the removal of the Prime Minister, Chief Ministers, and ministers from office. The party described the committee as a “gimmick” and announced it will not nominate any member.
The bills under review include the Union Territories Government (Amendment) Bill 2025, the Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill 2025, and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill 2025. These were introduced in the Lok Sabha during the monsoon session and referred to a JPC following strong opposition protests.
According to the proposed provisions, the bills outline that the Prime Minister, Chief Ministers, and ministers could be removed from office if they face serious charges and remain in custody for 30 consecutive days. The JPC will comprise 21 members from the Lok Sabha and 10 from the Rajya Sabha, and is expected to submit its report in the upcoming winter session, likely to begin in the third week of November.
The TMC stated, “We oppose the 130th Constitution Amendment Bill even at the proposal stage. In our view, the JPC is a gimmick, and hence we are not nominating anyone from the Trinamool Congress.”
Earlier, TMC chief and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had also criticised these bills, calling them worse than a “super emergency.” She alleged that the legislation aims to strengthen a one-party, one-leader system, undermining India’s democratic framework. Banerjee further argued that the bills strike at the very core of the Constitution’s basic structure.
