Uttarakhand Municipal Elections Today: BJP and Congress Stake Reputations

Polling is underway today in 11 municipal corporations and 100 municipalities across Uttarakhand. For major political parties, particularly the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress, this election holds significant importance. Meanwhile, independent candidates are capitalizing on internal dissent within these parties.

BJP’s Challenge and New Strategy

The BJP aims to surpass its 2018 record, where it won five municipal corporations and 43 municipalities. This time, the party has fielded several fresh candidates in key constituencies. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has appealed for support for the “triple-engine government” and expressed confidence in achieving a century in municipal wins.

Congress’s Unity and Aspirations

The Congress has campaigned aggressively, banking on anti-incumbency sentiments. With state president Karan Mahara leading from the front, the party has aimed for unity among its leaders. However, defections to the BJP and internal dissent in some areas pose challenges. In 2018, Congress secured mayoral positions in Kotdwar and Haridwar. This time, the party hopes to expand its victories across more municipalities.
