A demand has been raised in Uttarakhand to increase the retirement age of teachers from 60 to 62 years, on the lines of Uttar Pradesh. The Uttarakhand State Primary Teachers’ Association has submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami through the All India Primary Teachers Federation, seeking resolution of various issues related to teachers.
In the memorandum, the federation pointed out that Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand were once a single state and several teachers were appointed simultaneously in the basic education system. However, while teachers in Uttar Pradesh are allowed to serve till the age of 62, their counterparts in Uttarakhand retire at 60, leading to what the association termed as inequality.
Ad-hoc committee member of the Uttarakhand State Primary Teachers’ Association, Jitendra Singh Valdiya, informed that the major demands and problems of teachers have been formally brought to the notice of the state government through a written communication. He stated that extending the service period would allow the education system to benefit from the experience of senior teachers and would also boost teachers’ morale.
The association further urged the Chief Minister to issue necessary directions to the concerned departments not only to enhance the retirement age to 62 years but also to address other pending issues affecting teachers.
