The government in Uttarakhand has enforced the Uniform Civil Code amendment ordinance, introducing stricter provisions related to marriage and live-in relationships. With the approval of Governor Gurmit Singh, the Uniform Civil Code Uttarakhand Amendment Ordinance 2026 has officially come into force across the state.
Under the new provisions, anyone who hides or provides false information about their identity while getting married can now face legal action. If either party gives incorrect details regarding their identity or marital status, it will become grounds for declaring the marriage void.
Officials said that individuals who conceal their identity or marital status to marry someone can be prosecuted under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The move is aimed at making the Uniform Civil Code more effective and preventing fraudulent marriages.
Stricter Rules for Live-in Relationships
The amendment ordinance has also introduced stricter provisions regarding live-in relationships. If a person establishes a live-in relationship through force, pressure or fraud, the offender can face up to seven years of imprisonment along with a fine.
Similarly, living in a live-in relationship within prohibited or close blood relations, which violates Section 380(2), can also lead to a seven-year jail term.
In cases where an adult is found living in a live-in relationship with a minor, the law provides for six months of imprisonment and a fine of up to ₹50,000.
Registration and Cancellation Provisions
The ordinance also introduces rules regarding registration and termination of live-in relationships. When a live-in relationship ends, the registrar will issue a formal certificate to both parties in a prescribed format.
The authority to cancel the registration of marriage, divorce or live-in relationships has been given to the Registrar General. However, before cancelling any registration, both parties must be given a proper opportunity to present their side.
The state government said the amendment aims to strengthen legal safeguards related to marriage and relationships while ensuring transparency and accountability in registrations.
