A major electrification project is underway in Uttarakhand’s remote border regions. Under the Central Government’s Vibrant Villages Programme (VVP) and Border Outpost (BOP) Scheme, electricity will soon reach 882 houses in eight strategic villages along the India-China border, along with 43 Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) outposts.
The Uttarakhand Power Corporation Limited (UPCL) has finalized tenders to supply grid-based electricity to these areas in Pithoragarh, Uttarkashi, and Chamoli districts. The initiative aims to strengthen national security while also empowering border communities.
The villages identified include Purali in Uttarkashi, and Navi, Kutti, Gunji, Garbyang, Sheela, Baling, and Tidang in Pithoragarh. Survey work is ongoing to map power lines, determine pole placements, and finalize technical planning in these high-altitude terrains.
Despite harsh weather and tough accessibility, UPCL teams are working on a war footing. UPCL MD Anil Kumar stated that, under the guidance of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, the initiative is being fast-tracked due to its critical importance for national security and rural empowerment.
Electrification of these regions is expected to boost the operational efficiency of ITBP posts and significantly enhance education, healthcare, employment, and digital connectivity for local residents.
