79 more homestay registrations cancelled in Dehradun over rule violations

Detailed News:
Dehradun: The district administration has cancelled registrations of 79 more homestays for operating against prescribed norms. Most of the homestays were found functioning like hotels, where the owners were not residing on the premises.

Earlier, action had been taken against 17 homestays. With the latest action, registrations of a total of 96 homestays have now been cancelled.

District Magistrate Savin Bansal said Operation Safai was launched in April. The names of the homestays against which action has been taken are also being removed from the website to avoid any confusion among people.

Five magistrate teams of the district administration have conducted 136 inspections in different areas so far.

During the investigation, several homestays were found operating like hotels and commercial establishments in violation of rules. Inspections also revealed absence of fire safety equipment and food licences at many places, while several units were being operated on lease or rent.

Authorities found that owners were not residing in many homestays and more rooms than the permitted capacity were being operated. Complaints were also received regarding illegal bar operations, loud DJ music and unlawful activities at some locations.

Incidents related to unruly behaviour, drunk nuisance, overspeeding vehicles and firing with weapons were also reported from some places, affecting law and order.

The District Magistrate said the original objective of the homestay scheme was to promote local culture, traditional cuisine and provide income opportunities to local residents, but some operators were running them as commercial hotels.
