Tiger deaths in Uttarakhand have decreased by 61.90% this year, reflecting the success of conservation efforts. According to the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA), only eight tiger deaths have been reported so far in 2024, compared to 21 deaths last year. Additionally, no poaching incidents have been recorded this year, indicating strengthened protection measures.
In 2022, the state witnessed a concerning rise in tiger deaths, with the first case reported on January 23. By the end of the year, 21 tiger deaths were documented, including cases of poaching. Tiger skins were seized, though the exact locations of poaching incidents remained undisclosed.
Between 2012 and September 2024, Uttarakhand recorded 132 tiger deaths, placing it fourth nationally. Madhya Pradesh reported the highest number, with 365 deaths.
To curb unnatural tiger deaths, Uttarakhand’s forest department has intensified patrolling and monitoring efforts. Measures have been taken to improve tiger habitats, ensure adequate prey availability, and enhance security. Eco-tourism stakeholders have also been involved in these conservation initiatives.
