Dehradun: Asian Open Short Track Speed Skating Trophy 2026 Begins, CM Dhami Inaugurates Event

Dehradun: The Asian Open Short Track Speed Skating Trophy 2026 began at Himadri Ice Rink in Dehradun on Monday, with more than 270 athletes from 14 countries taking part in the international competition.

Teams from across Asia and other countries have arrived in Dehradun for the event. A total of 102 coaches, referees and technical officials are also participating in the competition.

Athletes from Hong Kong, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, Singapore, Australia, Mongolia, Malaysia, Chinese Taipei, Indonesia, Uzbekistan, China, South Korea and host India are competing in the tournament. Official practice sessions for the athletes began on August 14, with players from different countries continuing their preparations at Himadri Ice Rink on Monday.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami formally inaugurated the competition. He said Uttarakhand is building an identity not only as Devbhoomi and Veerbhoomi but also as a sporting destination. He said the state government is continuously expanding facilities and support for sports and athletes.

Dhami said young athletes from Uttarakhand are making their mark at national and international levels and that such international competitions would provide them with greater exposure and opportunities.

The competition is also significant for Indian short track speed skaters. Indian athletes who achieve World Cup-level qualifying times during the event could get an opportunity to participate in future World Cup competitions.

India is hosting the international competition for the second consecutive time. The tournament will continue from August 17 to 20, with leading athletes from India and other participating countries competing at Himadri Ice Rink.
