Uttarakhand Police to Get New Look as Uniform Badges, Cap Insignia and Flags Face Changes

The Uttarakhand Police Department is preparing to change its uniform insignia, cap symbols and police flag as part of an effort to give the force a distinct visual identity. The proposed changes will affect badges and other symbols worn by personnel, while the department is also preparing to update its flag after the state’s Foundation Day celebrations.

Under the proposed changes, police personnel will wear a badge on the chest, similar to the pattern used by the Uttar Pradesh Police. The insignia on police uniforms and the formation symbol on caps will also be modified. The department’s existing monogram, introduced in 2021 by former Director General of Police Ashok Kumar, is being revised as well. Police personnel currently wear this badge on the left sleeve.

Uniform insignia and badges identify personnel’s rank and departmental affiliation. The proposed revisions are expected to change the appearance of Uttarakhand Police uniforms while retaining their role in identifying members of the force.

The changes come as Uttarakhand Police prepares to receive the President’s Police Colour, a prestigious recognition for a police force. Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to formally present the honour at the main statehood celebration in Dehradun. Although Uttarakhand Foundation Day falls on November 9, the police department is organising its programme on November 6, according to the report.

Changes to Police Flags May Cost Crores

The proposed changes to the police flag’s colours, uniform badges and insignia could impose a financial burden of around ₹4 crore to ₹5 crore on the department. Police personnel may also need to purchase new uniforms to comply with the revised design.

The changes will extend beyond individual uniforms. Police flags displayed in the offices of Indian Police Service (IPS) officers are also expected to be replaced. The colours of flags displayed on police department buildings will be updated as part of the exercise.

The planned revisions would mark another change to the force’s visual identity following the introduction of its monogram in 2021. The final appearance of the revised insignia and flags will depend on the department’s implementation of the proposed changes.
