Uttarakhand Electricity Tariff to Increase with Dual Hike, Regulatory Commission Plans Relief Measures

Uttarakhand is set to face a dual hike in electricity tariffs this year, as the Uttarakhand Electricity Regulatory Commission (UERC) considers both the annual tariff revisions of three energy corporations and the Power Development Fund (PDF) demand from UJVNL. However, the commission is also exploring ways to minimize the financial burden on consumers.

The three corporations — UPCL, PTCUL, and UJVNL — have proposed an average 29% tariff hike, with UPCL and PTCUL suggesting a 12% increase each and UJVNL proposing a 5% hike. While public hearings on the matter have been concluded, the final decision will incorporate feedback from stakeholders. The new rates are expected to take effect from April 1.

Additionally, UJVNL has sought ₹2,500 crore for its Maneri Bhali-II project, following a favorable decision from the Electricity Appellate Tribunal (APTEL). If collected in one go, this could further increase electricity bills by about 25%. However, the commission is likely to adopt a phased approach to ease the financial impact on consumers.

Due to recent municipal elections and subsequent holidays, the tariff announcement may face delays, with the new rates likely to be declared in mid-April.
