1991-batch IPS officer Rajeev Krishna has been appointed as the new Director General of Police (DGP) of Uttar Pradesh. The official announcement was made on Saturday evening, putting an end to days of speculation about a possible service extension for the current DGP Prashant Kumar, who is set to retire on May 31.
For the past week, there had been strong indications that Prashant Kumar might receive an extension, with sources suggesting that the decision could be announced at the last moment. However, the government ultimately chose to appoint Rajeev Krishna, who currently serves as Director General of Intelligence and Chairman of the Police Recruitment and Promotion Board, as the state’s top police officer.
Despite the state approving the Uttar Pradesh Police Chief Selection and Appointment Rules 2024 last year, the selection committee under these rules has not yet been formed. In this context, Rajeev Krishna—also DG Vigilance—was considered the strongest contender in case Prashant Kumar didn’t get an extension.
Known for his integrity and efficiency, Rajeev Krishna has served in various important roles over his career spanning more than 30 years. He is considered a trusted officer close to the administration and has twice received the President’s Gallantry Medal.
Notably, Rajeev Krishna has been appointed by superseding 11 senior IPS officers, underscoring the state government’s confidence in his leadership. A native of Gautam Buddh Nagar, he holds an engineering degree in Electronics and Communication. With four years and one month remaining in his service, Rajeev Krishna is expected to serve a long tenure as DGP of Uttar Pradesh.
