A rare four-horned ram (Khadu) has been born in Koti village of Chamoli district, raising speculation that it could lead the upcoming Nanda Raj Jat Yatra. The ram, now around five months old, has gone viral on social media as a possible Aguwa (lead ram) for the sacred Himalayan pilgrimage. However, the Rajjat Yatra Committee has clarified that only the ram chosen through religious tradition and divine signs will be appointed as the leader.
Gautam Mingwal, a local social worker and former block head, said the four-horned ram belongs to Harish Lal of Koti village, where a revered temple of Goddess Nanda is located. The village also serves as the fifth stop in the Nanda Devi Raj Jat Yatra, often referred to as the Himalayan Mahakumbh.
Harish Lal and his son Gaurav, who have been raising goats and sheep for two decades, said this is the first time they’ve seen a ram with four horns. They discovered the unusual feature about two weeks ago and have expressed willingness to offer the ram for the yatra if the committee accepts it.
Dr. Rakesh Kunwar, president of the Nanda Devi Rajjat Committee, emphasized that the selection of the ram and all other elements of the pilgrimage are guided strictly by traditional rituals and scriptures. So far, only the Maudvi ritual has been completed. The final decision on the pilgrimage will follow the Mannauti ritual on the upcoming Basant Panchami, when the full schedule of the yatra is expected to be announced.
He added that while four-horned rams are rare, their birth is not unheard of. Ultimately, only the ram chosen by divine indication and as per tradition will be designated to lead the yatra.
